We have developed a two-stage amplification system consisting of "in-line" preamplifiers and a second stage splitter amp. The system has a bandwidth that exceeds 1 GHz.
Engineering: Britt Holbrook, Pat Murray and Mani Tripathi.
The preamplifiers are "in-line" in that the same
coaxial cable is used to power them with a dc current and also carry the
fast output signal. The preamps are assembled in a cylindrical structure with BNC connectors at either end.
The preamplifiers plug in directly into the
base of photomultiplier tubes, as shown below.
The preamplifiers are powered by a second stage
splitter amplifier that provides two outputs. The gains of the two outputs
may be equalized or set in some fixed ratio. Shown below are two splitter
amp boxes, each housing 8 channels. A DB-25 connector provides voltage outputs
proportional to the anode current being drawn by each channel.
